Editorial Reviews

While steering clear of topical humor that would have dated these episodes, Season 4 of the The Dick Van Dyke Show is something of a '60s time capsule. Episodes deal with civil rights ("A Show of Hands," in which Rob and Laura accidentally dye their hands black), the British Invasion ("The Redcoats Are Coming," featuring the Fab Two, Chad and Jeremy), the Playboy philosophy ("The Man from Emperor"), and the then-popular "Candid Camera" ("The Ghost of A Chantz"). Flashback episodes, always a highlight, recall an unwittingly doped-up Laura's disastrous introduction to Rob's parents ("Pink Pills and Purple Parents"), Rob's own disastrous meeting with Alan Brady ("100 Terrible Hours"), and the Petries and their neighbors, the Helpers, vying for the same house ("Your Home Sweet Home Is My Sweet Home"). The romantic travails of lovelorn writer Sally Rogers provide pathos in "Romance, Roses, and Rye Bread." Jerry Van Dyke makes a welcome return as Rob's awkward brother Stacy in the farcical two-parter “4 1/2,” while guest star Don Rickles steals his scenes as a thief trapped in an elevator with Rob and a very pregnant Laura. Richie's mom has got it going on in "The Lady and the Babysitter," in which the Petries' teenage babysitter develops a crush on Laura. The Emmy-nominated benchmark episode, "Never Bathe on Saturday," distills this series' singular blend of slapstick, sophistication, and sex appeal, as Rob and Laura -- TV's most glamorous couple -- are forced to postpone their second honeymoon after Laura (provocatively off-camera) gets her toe caught in the hotel bathtub. As this penultimate season demonstrates, The Dick Van Dyke Show, with its singular cast and smart writing, is more than just a classic TV show. It was charmed. And like the show itself, these DVD sets just keep getting better, with some rare and wonderful archival gems, such as Van Dyke singing the actual words to the show's trippy theme song at the Hollywood Bowl, and the entire 1994 CBS special, The Dick Van Dyke Show Remembered. June 03, 2006: Season 4 is definitely my favorite season. The Dyke Van Dyke Show is a timeless classic. Who could forget the shows like "pink pills and purple parents" or "never bathe on a saturday"? Rob and Laura Petrie are the most charismatic, captivating, and hilarious couple ever to grace the big screen.
