After his short-lived sitcom The Van Dyke Show left the air in 1988, Dick Van Dyke turned to dramatic television in 1993 with the series Diagnosis Murder. Spun off Van Dyke's guest-starring role as a doctor who aided police in an episode of Jake and the Fatman -- this is included here as a bonus -- Diagnosis Murder got its start with three TV movies (unfortunately not included on the set): "Diagnosis of Murder"; "The House on Sycamore Street"; and "A Twist of the Knife." Van Dyke portrays Dr. Mark Sloan, chief of internal medicine at Community General Hospital in Los Angeles. His role as medical consultant to the LAPD brings him into contact with mysterious deaths every week, and these inevitably turn into whodunits Sloan can't help but investigate. Assisting him in his search for the murderer are colleagues Dr. Jack Stewart (Scott Baio), Sloan's prodigy and friend; Dr. Amanda Bentley (Victoria Rowell), resident pathologist and assistant to the county coroner; and Sloan's son, Steve (real-life son Barry Van Dyke), a detective with the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division. The 19 Season 1 episodes include a number of excellent outings: Robert Guillaume guests as a murdering priest in "Miracle Cure"; Dom DeLuise is featured in "Murder at the Telethon" as a comic suspected of murdering a fellow comedian; and "Inheritance of Death" concerns the death of Sloan's cousin, who leaves his millions to Community General, but whose children wind up suspects. Another favorite is "The Restless Remains," in which a wealthy financier visiting Dr. Sloan’s house drops dead, but his body disappears before the paramedics arrive. Other familiar faces making guest turns this year include Delta Burke, Gerald McRaney, Roma Downey, William Katt, John Beck, Ken Kercheval, and the Van Patten siblings Dick and Joyce.
