    Editorial Reviews

Based on the murder mystery novels by British author P. D. James, Death in Holy Orders stars Martin Shaw as Scotland Yard detective Commander Adam Dalgliesh, who is on the hunt for a killer at a theological college. St. Anselm's is located in a small British seaside town, and when one of the seminary students is found dead under a mound of sand, Dalgliesh is asked to look into it. He expects a straightforward investigation but soon uncovers an even larger mystery as to the nature of the student's death. A BBC production, Death in Holy Orders marks Shaw's first pass at James's master sleuth, Dalgliesh, a character essayed brilliantly for 15 years by Roy Marsden. This production aired in the U.S. on the PBS series Mystery! in October 2004. Christina Urban, Barnes & Noble

April 22, 2005: In P.D James’s latest novel, “Death in Holy Orders”, the reader follows Commander Adam Dalgliesh as he embarks on another thrilling adventure. The novel is set in the east coast of Suffolk at St. Anselm’s theological college, which is where Dalgliesh went to school as a young boy. Upon his arrival at the college, Dalgliesh investigates the death of a student named Ronald Treeves. Ronald’s death was deemed an accident but his father, a very powerful business man, believes there was foul play involved. What arouses even more suspicion is that the woman who found Ronald’s body died less than a week later due to a weak heart. As Dalgliesh furthers his investigation at St. Anselm’s he discovers that the college is being pushed into closure due to bad publicity and lack of funds. If St Anselm’s does close its doors, the numerous priceless artifacts that belong to the college will be given to the priests and higher officials. Dalgliesh believes this a motive for murder when he finds the archdeacon beaten to death inside the chapel. This is a very well written novel but the amount of characters makes it confusing and very hard to follow. Although well developed, the characters were so numerous that the reader gets easily lost. The plot of the book was not what I expected it to be. It never put me on the edge of my seat or left me craving more. It lacked the unexpected twist that is so common in the works of P.D James. Also, the length of the book makes the plot drag. I think making the novel shorter could have really helped readers become more interested. Besides those two things, I really enjoyed this novel. P.D James is a literary genius and one of the best mystery writers ever. I recommend this novel to anyone interested in the Adam Dalgliesh series and enjoys the works of P.D James.
