Editorial Reviews

This critically acclaimed HBO series about one of the West's wildest settlements in the days just following the Civil War mixes rich characterizations, gritty period detail, and dialogue that's as mannered as it is profane. Season 2 doesn't back down an inch, though some semblance of order is beginning to arrive in Deadwood: Telegraph poles are making their way into town, and the gold rush has attracted industrial miners. More important, Deadwood now has a sheriff -- hardware store owner Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) reluctantly accepted the position -- though it has hardly made the place any less lawless. Bullock's long-simmering feud with saloon owner Al Swearengen (Ian McShane) comes to a head in the two-part opener, "A Lie Agreed Upon," ending in a bloody confrontation that leaves nearly everyone in camp nursing wounds. Swearengen's main worries, however, concern rival saloon owner Cy Tolliver (Powers Boothe) and a particularly troublesome gallstone. Bullock has problems of his own: His brother's widow (Anna Gunn) has arrived in town to accept his offer of marriage, much to the dismay of Alma Garrett (Molly Parker), who may be pregnant with Bullock's child. She also has the richest gold claim in Deadwood, and her formation of a bank -- with help from Bullock's business partner, Sol (John Hawkes) -- ruffles feathers everywhere. Other problems Deadwood faces in Season 2: Pinkertons; crooked government officials; a particularly nasty company man (Garret Dillahunt); a Chinese prostitution ring; and the near-constant threat of death and violence. You may not want to live there, but this second visit to Deadwood only leaves you wanting to return. Bill Pearis, Barnes & Noble

June 30, 2009: Deadwood season 2 is very good. However,it is not a exciting as the first season. Here the characters are being pretty established in their roles. The storylines are good and it has some excitement. The acting is good.New characters are added to help change the atmosphere and tension of the town.It is a very well written show.If you like westerns I believe a person would like this show.
