Set in contemporary Los Angeles as well as the Los Angeles of the 1940s, Dead Again explores a romance between two star-crossed lovers -- and the doomed passion they shared in their last lifetime. Los Angeles detective Mike Church (Kenneth Branagh) comes to the aid of mute, amnesia-victim Grace (Emma Thompson) and falls in love with her. He sets out to discover her true identity and the source of her terrible nightmares. Mike is aided in his investigation by hypnotist/furniture dealer Franklyn Madison (Derek Jacobi) who discovers that in a past life Grace was Margaret Strauss (also played by Thompson), who may have been mudered by her husband Roman (Branagh). April 27, 2009: Modern film-making is a far cry from the beginnings of the movie industry and most people would probably say it's greatly improved. Techically speaking, there's no arguing that point but there's something to be said for tried and true storytelling with a dash of chills for good measure. "Dead Again" is a great mix of suspense, horror and romance in the old style and it's a style that I miss. Movies like this aren't usually a financial success so they don't get made but they are definitely worth your attention because they grab you right from the start and keep you guessing without being heavy-handed or cliched. No over the top special effects are necessary when you've got a great story.

June 03, 2006: Kenneth Branagh follows up his directorial debut ("Henry V") with this well-plotted suspense thriller written by Scott Frank. As always, Mr. Branagh assembled a top-notch cast (including his then-wife Emma Thompson see "Sense & Sensibility") and got terrific performances. It would be criminal to give away the Hitchcock-like story-line, but the Master Of Suspense would have appreciated this homage to his films, notably the 1954 classic "Dial 'M' For Murder" starring the late Princess Grace Kelly Of Monaco (she married Prince Rainier Of Monaco in 1956 and tragically died in a car crash in 1982). The music by frequent Branagh collaborator Patrick Doyle (who appears in a small role in the film) is nothing short of brilliant. Rated PG-13 for some strong language and mild violence.
