    Editorial Reviews

A groundbreaking series that redefined the way teenagers are portrayed on TV, Dawson's Creek moved into its third season with a renewed emphasis on the changing preferences and priorities of its principal characters, but without series creator Kevin Williamson. Set in a small Massachusetts coastal town (although filmed in North Carolina), Creek's third year finds introspective dreamer Dawson Leary (James Van Der Beek) still fixated on becoming a filmmaker but losing his direction when it comes to best friend Joey Potter (Katie Holmes), the erstwhile tomboy now blossoming into a beautiful young woman. The 23 episodes of Season 3 find Pacey (Joshua Jackson) making a serious bid for Joey's affections, while another friend, Jack (Kerr Smith), grapples with issues related to his homosexuality. The intelligent but frequently misdirected Jen (Michelle Williams) gets into some mischief this year, as the series enters a phase dominated by increasingly complex conflicts. Dawson's Creek initially impressed critics and viewers with its unusually mature, literate dialogue, making it one of TV's most talked-about shows. Ironically, as it became a less unique presence on the dial this third season, the characters had gradually aged into their personas and the show added dramatic gravity -- Dawson's Creek was simultaneously less buzzed-about and better. Although some of the episodes resort to soap opera situations, on the whole they put the characters in realistic dilemmas that are easily recognizable to teen viewers, and the passage of time hasn't dimmed their effectiveness one bit. November 29, 2004: This was the best teen soap ever!!! I have watched every episode at least 4 times and still love it. I was growing up as the characters did and related to almost all of the storie lines. Years from now i will be talking about Dawson's Creek like my mom talks about the Wonder Years.
