Editorial Reviews

Though it only lasted two seasons, this small-screen venture by film director James Cameron (Terminator, Titanic) quickly became must-see TV for fans of postapocalyptic thrillers -- and of hot young sci-fi vixens. Series star Jessica Alba is part cat and all fox as the mutant Max Guevara, whose DNA was fused with feline genes in a covert federal lab. Like the rest of America's citzenry circa 2019, Max is in thrall to the Pulse, the electromagnetic aftereffect of a nuclear attack launched by terrorists a decade earlier. But the scrappy little thief snaps out of it. After Logan (Michael Weatherly) catches Max trying to burglarize his apartment, she joins the wealthy crusader on a mission to make their ugly world a better place. While the premise is hardly fresh -- Blade Runner is just one of several obvious sources -- Dark Angel updates its dystopia with inventive use of hip-hop music and street culture. In contrast to the ambience of Buffy's suburban Sunnydale, the urban, multiracial cast is refreshing. And it's no coincidence that Max's surname is Guevara. "Haven," which tracks the murder of political activists, is among several gritty episodes that target the military-industrial complex with a revolutionary fervor worthy of Che. Cree McCree, Barnes & Noble
