Jeff Balsmeyer makes his writing and directing debut with the Australian romantic comedy Danny Deckchair. Rhys Ifans plays Danny Morgan, a building tradesman living in the Sydney suburbs with his upwardly mobile real-estate agent girlfriend, Trudy (Justine Clarke). When she chooses to postpone their vacation together in order to show a house to TV personality Sandy Upman (Rhys Muldoon), Danny takes matters into his own hands by fastening helium balloons to a chair and sailing over the city. Landing in the small town of Clarence, he meets and falls in love with parking cop Glenda (Miranda Otto). Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

March 22, 2005: This movie is really great for those that like foreign films. I really enjoyed Danny's character and the situation he found himself in.

February 02, 2005: 'Danny Deckchair' is one of those movies you watch, then run out and recommend it to all your friends. Rhys Ifans (who is best known in his role as Hugh Grant's flatmate in 'Notting Hill') was cast perfectly in the role of Danny, a construction worker with a girlfriend who wants to go places and feels he's one of the little people who will just hold her back. Danny has big, somewhat goofy ideas, and after seeing his girlfrind out with another man he is struck with one such idea. Danny takes off in a deckchair with balloons fastened to it and is carried off to the small country town of Clarence, where he crashes in local parking cop Glenda's yard. The movie centers around their budding relationship, as well as how the local townspeople react to Danny. Trouble brews from far away, however, in the form of Danny's girlfriend from the big city and her new romantic interest, a reporter out to find out what happened to Danny and make a name for himself. The movie is really quite sweet and very funny. It has a fairy tale quality with a romantic atmosphere and beautiful scenery.
