    Editorial Reviews

Jon Lovitz brings his uniquely sour genius to this animated series, providing the voice for Jay Sherman, the titular movie reviewer whose dysfunctional life is like one long bomb. Or maybe it's a bomb with 22 sequels, with ABC airing 13 episodes in 1994 and Fox finishing off the final 10 in 1995. This three-disc set collects the whole bunch, which will allow folks to become reacquainted with the consummate loser Jay; his ex-wife, Ardeth, who loathes him (voiced by Brenda Vaccaro on ABC, Rhea Perlman on Fox); the odd, adoptive parents who barely like him (Judith Ivey and Gerrit Graham); his sister, Margo (Bart Simpson voice Nancy Cartwright); his son, Marty (Christine Cavanaugh); and Duke Phillips (Charles Napier), the cruel boss at the cable station where Jay hosts a movie review show. Highlight episodes include "Eyes on the Prize," wherein a celebration of Jay's 1,000th episode affords cameo voice opportunities for Orson Welles, Phil Hartman, Adam West, and Jimmy Breslin. In fact, the whole series -- a product of Simpsons producer Gracie Films -- is a treasure trove of celebrity voice turns. Showing up over the course of the 23 episodes are: Bob Costas, Billy Crystal, Geraldo Rivera, Rod Steiger, Rod McKuen, Steve Allen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Rex Reed, Gene Siskel, Roger Ebert, Gene Shalit, Queen Latifah, Ricki Lake, June Lockhart, and Milton Berle. Not shabby at all for a show that never quite caught on. Barnes & Noble
