King Company marches into its third season with its core ensemble intact (as with the anonymous Enterprise crew members on Star Trek, it was mostly the grunts who were this series' casualties). This season's duty roster of character actors is particularly impressive. The episode "Silver Service," for example, features the once-in-a-lifetime triumvirate of silent film heartthrob Ramon Navarro, Mickey Rooney, and ingénue Claudine Longet. Among those who really earn their stripes are Roddy McDowell as a wily German infiltrator in "The Long Walk," Robert Duvall as a German munitions expert in "The Enemy," and Frankie Avalon as a cocky soldier with hometown ties to Kirby in "Brother, Brother." But Combat! was not about star turns. It was at heart an ensemble show that stayed true to its mission to portray without Hollywood hokum the triumphs, tragedies, and terrors of war as experienced from the front-line trenches. Vic Morrow, as hard-bitten Sgt. Saunders, continues to distinguish himself as an actor and director in this first volume from Season 3. Among his finest hours are "The Duel," in which Saunders rallies cowardly soldier Bobby Rydell to hold off a German tank, and "The Long Way Back," which finds Saunders trapped under a beam and abandoned by Sal Mineo -- in cowardly soldier mode. "The Little Carousel" is among the series' most devastating episodes, and finds Saunders opening his war-torn heart to a 13-year-old student nurse. Rousing and humanistic, Combat! ranks with television's best war dramas. Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble
