Peter Falk returns to his four-time Emmy-winning role as Lt. Columbo, everyone's favorite trench coat-wearing police detective. In 1989, a decade after the original series ended, Falk starred in five new mysteries. This set includes: "Columbo Goes to the Guillotine" (originally airing February 6) in which the stogie-toting sleuth hunts for the truth behind killer magician Anthony Andrews's trick; "Murder, Smoke, and Shadows" (February 27), which finds Columbo matching wits against a homicidal movie director (Fisher Stevens); "Sex and the Married Detective" (April 3), in which sex therapist Lindsay Crouse attempts to cover up her crime of passion; "Grand Deceptions" (May 1), featuring a renegade colonel (Robert Foxworth) with a penchant for shady arms deals and generals' wives; and finally, "Murder, a Self-Portrait" (November 25), in which an artist (Patrick Bauchau) living with three women comes under suspicion when one of his lovers turns up dead. March 31, 2009: I like this edition of Columbo but,I am not in love with it.The original Columbo series was a lot better. This is not to say that Peter Falk is no good.Peter Falk is still good in this role. However, what is lacking is great writing and direction. The series had interesting story lines.Even when the viewer already knew who the killer was in was compelling to see Columbo solve the mystery. The stories are not as compelling as the original shows. The suspects also are not as interesting as say Robert Culp was in his roles or Robert Conrad,Ross Martin,& Leonard Nimoy and etc.It is a nice addition to one's Columbo collection. It is good to see Peter Falk reprise his role and pester the suspect "Just one more thing"his key phrase.Just do not expect the great stories you fell in love with.
