November 21, 2009: Having lived through the cold-war period and remembering the international chess matches, this production is just great. The singing is absolutely divine. It caused me to go back and research the matches I lived through!

October 19, 2009: When I found out that there was a recording of Chess in Concert I knew I had to have it. This musical is very well written and is just as relevent today as it was in the 80's. The story revolves around two chess champions, one from the U.S. and one from Russia, during the cold war. Tension rises between the two as the american (Adam Pascal) shows he has no lost love for the russian (Josh Groban). Complicating matters is the addition of a mutual attraction to the american's second (Idina Menzel) who has become disenfranchised with the infantile actions of her fellow players. I was a bit worried about the work before I watched it since things had been shifted, added, and removed from the two original versions (London and U.S. cast recordings) that I have and know so well, but I knew the cast was amazing so I gave it a go and wasn't disapointed in the least. I was particularly blown away by Idina Menzel's powerful performance of Nobody's Side, Josh Groban's beautiful rendition of Anthem and Adam Pascal's hart wrenching Pitty the Child. All three songs are on my favorites list and I was not left wanting anything from their performance. I highly recomend this to anyone.

I Also Recommend: Rent, I Stand, Chess in Concert [2008 London Concert Cast].
