Editorial Reviews

The landmark TV drama that turned traditional TV gender roles upside down makes its debut on this four-disc set. By redefining the male-dominated cop drama, Cagney & Lacey offered up something entirely new: two strong and intelligent female detectives, with real lives and real problems -- ordinary women doing extraordinary work. The series teams Mary Beth Lacey (Tyne Daly) and Christine Cagney (Sharon Gless), two detectives whose opposing personalities and disparate crime-fighting styles mesh to form one of the most memorable duos in TV history. The pilot debuted on CBS in 1981 (with Loretta Swit as Cagney), and seven episodes aired in March and April 1982 -- featuring Meg Foster as Cagney -- before CBS unceremoniously canceled the series. But a letter-writing campaign by fans helped bring C&L back in October 1982, albeit with the more softly feminine Gless recast as the young show's third and final Chris Cagney. The program eventually ran for seven seasons (along with four TV movies) and earned 14 Emmys in the process -- including two wins for Outstanding Drama Series, as well as four Best Actress awards for Daly and two for Gless. Now recognized as a classic, Cagney & Lacey tackled controversial social issues that had previously been TV taboos, such as abortion rights and date rape. Subtitled "The True Beginning," this first-season Cagney & Lacey set is technically the series' second, after Gless came aboard, and features a two-part featurette, "Breaking the Laws of TV." October 29, 2009: I'd forgotten how good old TV series were. They really tell a story instead of just shocking you with incidents. Cagney and Lacey is one of the best at telling a good story. Great entertainment.

July 04, 2007: Easily, one of the best television series, although I admit I'd sit center stage to watch Tyne Daly read the Cornflakes box. She is such a wonderful actress. Sharon Gless was the perfect partner and I'm just delighted it's now on DVD. It was one of the most intelligent partnerships depicted on television. Let's keep the subsequent seasons coming
