Editorial Reviews

Soviet radicals upset with the thawing of the Cold War explode a nuclear weapon in Russia, setting off a series of events that may very well trigger World War III. The president (Martin Landau) has been isolated after a helicopter accident and must outwit government and military officials who are attempting to go forward with the war. The film centers on the relationship between a pair of American pilots who have been ordered to bomb the U.S.S.R. and the attempts by some factions to bring them home before global Armageddon. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide All Movie Guide

May 29, 2005: A terrific "could this really have happened" story. Everyone's nightmare come true, similar to "Fail Safe," yet a different take on the subject. Kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end, and even though I know how it ends, I keep watching it because it is my favorite cold war story, even more so than "Hunt for Red October" (Sorry Sean Connery but Powers Boothe really rocks! Even though Rebecca De Mornay makes a realistic co-pilot she can't substitute for Sam Neill.). Only "On the Beach," "The Day After," and "Testament" surpasses this movie in thrills and scares. Worth buying to have in one's library.
