    Editorial Reviews

Director Mario Bava's second thriller revolves around a fashion salon owned by wealthy Cristina (Eva Bartok) and her greedy lover Max (Cameron Mitchell). The salon is a front for cocaine-trafficking and blackmail, so when model Isabella (Lea Kruger) is viciously strangled, leaving a detailed diary behind, many of the people connected with the salon become very nervous. Isabella's roommate Nicole (Arianna Gorini) finds the diary and soon has her throat clawed out with a piece of medieval armor. Peggy (Mary Arden), who borrowed abortion money from Isabella, is tortured and has her face pressed into a red-hot iron. The bodies continue to pile up until a conspiracy is exposed and the perpetrators start getting their just desserts. Luciano Pigozzi, Massimo Righi, and Claude Dantes are among the cast. Chillingly luscious cinematic sadism!by Anonymous

February 23, 2001: This is one of Bava's more fully realized films, with its coolly slinking camera movements, rich color schemes and virtuoso murder sequences. The dialogue is not on the level of Tonino Guerra, perhaps, but there's a real intelligence at work behind the camera. Modern horror films owe an incalculable debt--for better or worse--to Bava's masked and gloved killer who targets beautiful, vulnerable women. No less influential is the surreal, atmospheric lighting. A key horror film, and an absolute must-see for anyone interested in the cinema as a self-conscious art form. Compatability problems aside--which only affect a handful of player models anyway--this is a terrific DVD package. First, the transfer is from a German print and it looks sharp, with terrific color considering the age of the film. I noticed all sorts of visual details that escaped me before thanks to the excellent video transfer. Tim Lucas' audio commentary is engaging, as to be expected from the #1 Bava expert. The other extras, including alternate language tracks, trailers and interviews, round out the package nicely. VCI home video put a lot of effort into this DVD and it really paid off. The only thing I didn't like was the look of the subtitles, which is a minor complaint in the face of all the great things this DVD has to offer.
