Editorial Reviews

Season 2 (2007) of HBO's critically acclaimed Big Love finds the modern-day polygamist Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton) and his three wives struggling to pick up the pieces after first wife Barb's (Jeanne Tripplehorn) outing at the Beehive Mother of the Year ceremony. Second wife Nicki (Chloë Sevigny) learns that it was her father, Roman Grant (Harry Dean Stanton), prophet of the fundamentalist Juniper Creek Compound, who betrayed them, and she battles conflicting family loyalties. And third wife Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin), newly pregnant, fights for a bigger piece of the family pie with an eye toward bringing a new wife and confidante into the fold. All of this domestic drama plays out against the backdrop of Bill's new, visionary business plans -- which put him into direct conflict with his father-in-law and some rather unexpected and unsavory antagonists. As if juggling three wives weren't tricky enough, it looks like Bill won't be getting much sleep in any of his houses this year. Bonus features include three prequels that explore the world of Big Love: one set five years before the point at which Season 1 starts, another set three years before, and a third set during the preceding year. FINALLY a great TV series about Mormonism!by dec0558

March 23, 2009: With BIG LOVE someone has finally produced a great TV series about Mormonism! BIG LOVE is set in modern day Utah, and it explores the life and cultures of the VAST variety of Mormons who live there.

Contrary to what most people assume, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints(often called the LDS Church and headquartered in Salt Lake City)no more represents or speaks for ALL Mormons anymore than the Catholic Church (headquarterd in Rome) speaks for ALL Christians.

The plot line of BIG LOVE explores Mormons--ranging from the individualistic polygamous family that is the heart of the series, to cult-like polygamous seperatist groups (like the infamous FLDS Church in Arizona and Texas), to monogamist LDS Mormons (members of the LDS Church) to Anti-Mormons.

interesting view of plural marriageby Anonymous

May 01, 2008: In the wake of the current YFZ community scandal, as well as the ongoing trials of their "prophet," Warren Jeffs, this makes interesting viewing. One might condone 'plural marriage' "the euphemism for polygamy" if it involves consenting adults, but communities like YFZ or the FLDS compounds in Colorado City, AZ. let 70 year old men marry 13 year old children. The pedophelia doesn't end with just the girls. Big Love shows this and more. With fantastic performances by the entire cast. But special shout-outs go to Chloe Sevigny, Mary Kay Place and most especially Grace Zabriskie.
