This live-action version of the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast stars Rebecca De Mornay as the woman who learns to see the charm and love beneath the exterior of a boorish beast who imprisons her in his castle in order to collect a debt from her father. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide All Movie Guide

February 16, 2009: I've taught music, and drama for over 20 years and I've had students who would have done a better job of this movie. Not all actors are singers and they shouldn't even try if they don't have a chance of pulling it off. The plot was sluggish and inane. The actors seemed to be reading the script off cue cards. My 6, 10 and 12 year old all gave it thumbs down and we see a lot of movies. This one didn't even hold the interest of the dog. Horrible time and money waster. The reviewer that loved it, must not get out much or get to see good movies and plays. This thing was a disaster.

January 17, 2006: All the actors in this movie are so well suited for their roles, it's as if they were born to play the parts. I used to watch almost all the time when I was little and when I saw this on DVD I had to grab a copy. It is just as good as it was when I orginally saw it. The production value, lavish sets and acting are all top notch. It was an inspired choice having gorgeous Rebecca De Mornay as Beauty and John Savage as the Beast, who makes the role his own. This and the TV series with Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman, are the best versions ever of the Beauty and the Beast story.
