Editorial Reviews

Ranked 14th in TV Guide's list of the top 25 all-time cult favorites, Beauty and the Beast launched the first of its three seasons on September 25, 1987, on CBS. Putting a modern twist to the "beauty meets beast" fable, the series starred Linda Hamilton as corporate attorney and socialite Catherine Chandler, and Ron Perlman as the mysterious, lion-like creature Vincent. In the series opener "Once Upon a Time in the City of New York," Catherine is abducted by thugs after being mistaken for someone else while she walks through Central Park. After being beaten and having her face slashed, she's left for dead. Emerging from the safety of the tunnels beneath the city, Vincent rescues Catherine and tends her wounds. They discover that they share an empathic -- and eventually romantic -- bond, despite Vincent's initially frightening appearance. Because of this, he remains hidden in the world underneath the city, where he lives with his mentor, "Father" Jacob Wells (Roy Dotrice). Much of the credit for making the series into more than just a monster tale goes to Perlman, who brings Vincent to life despite heavy prosthetic makeup that obscures his actual features. Romantic, well written, and a thinly veiled analogy for acceptance in current society, Beauty and the Beast is both a love story and great dramatic television. Christina Urban, Barnes & Noble

October 01, 2009: This was one of my favorite showes of all time. It has some awesome extras with it. It has a lot of plot twists, and it doesn't always have a happy ending. It is very realistic. The actors are awesome. The stories are very believable. It appeals to my children as well. I don't have to worry about there being inappropriate content either. It is a great family show!

Beauty and the Beast was a fav. of mine from the 80'sby Anonymous
