March 23, 2004: Thank you, Columbia Music and Barbra Streisand, for finally releasing this concert. Fans who watched Barbra's FINAL performance of 'The Concert' on HBO (taped in Anaheim) may have wondered what ever happened to OPENING NIGHT? When Barbra performed at the MGM Grand on Dec. 31, 1993 and Jan. 1, 1994, the entire concert was taped for release as a TV show. Somewhere along the way things changed, though. Barbra went on tour. And the TV show ended up being the closing night of Anaheim. Now, 10 years later, the footage from Las Vegas has been released on DVD! How does it differ from the Anaheim show? Well, the song line-up is basically the same. Barbra sings lots of her hits (People, The Way We Were, You Don't Bring Me Flowers) but the MGM Grand show contained a few songs that were dropped along the way during her tour. On this new DVD fans will finally get to see two new songs from the first act: 'What Is This Thing Called Love?', which is done in a sexy, drum-beating manner; and 'I'm In the Mood for Love' medley which contains 'Guilty' and 'Speak Low'. Act Two contains a hilarious guest appearance by Mike Myers as 'Coffee Talk' host Linda Richman. Barbra and 'Linda' do a funny skit utilizing Jewish expressions. Act Two also contains the Disney medley ('Someday My Prince Will Come', 'Once Upon A Dream' and 'When You Wish Upon A Star'). Also, some of the songs performed on this DVD are longer than what ended up on the Anaheim special. On 'Live at the MGM Grand' you will get to hear a longer version of 'I'm Still Here' with special lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim. Barbra's interpolation of 'Everybody Says Don't' is longer. 'Lover Man' is complete. And Barbra sings another verse of 'I'll Know.' Her psychiatrist scenes in the first act are a little bit different as well. Finally, my personal favorite reason as to why to own 'Live at the MGM Grand' DVD is because the dress Barbra wears is LIKE BUTTAH! In the Las Vegas shows, Barbra wore a gorgeous, empire-waisted, split-down-the-middle Donna Karan dress. Just great! Barbra's singing in Vegas is first-rate as well. Her voice is able to hit those high notes and navigate those lyrics. Enjoy 'The Concert: Live at the MGM Grand'! From the bonus tracks on this DVD, it is apparent that Columbia intends to release more of the classic Streisand television specials. This special is a great way to start!
