Latina heartthrobs Salma Hayek and Penélope Cruz co-headline the rousing indie Western Bandidas. The brainchild of producer/screenwriter Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Big Blue), Bandidas marks one of only a handful of films in its genre (along with Bad Girls, Cattle Annie and Little Britches, and Johnny Guitar) to use women as its principals, and distinguishes itself further by adding hefty doses of comic relief to the Western formula. Hayek and Cruz play Sara and Maria, respectively -- two women whose fathers (one a banker, the other a peasant farmer) are each wiped out by a nasty, vile, gun-wielding swindler named Tyler Jackson (Sling Blade co-star and country music singer Dwight Yoakam). Jackson cuts a bloody swath across the Southwest as he reduces one bank after another to an impoverished trash heap. In revenge, these women (who sit at opposite ends of the personality spectrum) vow to beat Tyler at his own game by hitting and robbing each of the banks before their father's killer can reach them. March 04, 2007: I don’t watch a lot of westerns. I have seen several of them over the years and I haven’t liked most of them. I usually only like the ones that aren’t the traditional type of westerns. I do tend to avoid most westerns. After reading the case of Bandidas, I decided to give it a chance and I did end up enjoying it overall. The plot kept my interest and there was a reason for why Maria and Sara turned to robbing banks. The plot wasn’t the most original, though the fact that the bank robbers were women was a little different since most westerns - or at least the ones I’ve seen - haven’t had women bank robbers. In this film we have Sara and Maria who are two very different women with nothing in common before their fathers were killed in connection to the railroad that was coming to Mexico. Tyler Jackson was going around taking land from poor farmers that was in the path of the railroad. He wouldn’t take no for an answer and would resort to anything, including killing, to get the land. Maria and Sara decided to fight back and steal back what Tyler had been taking. They convinced Bill Buck, a retired bank robber, to train them. Quentin was a criminologist that was sent to Mexico to investigate the bank robberies. Things weren’t adding up for Quentin in his investigation and he ended up helping Maria and Sara. The case for Bandidas did call the movie a comedy and describe it as hilarious. There were a few scenes that made me laugh, but the movie was far from hilarious. I really wouldn’t even consider the movie a comedy. It was more of an action adventure type of movie with a small amount of humor added in here and there. I think that more things were intended to be funny that just didn’t make me laugh. The funniest things for me involved Quentin and even those scenes weren’t that funny. There wasn’t that much adventure in the movie either though there was enough going on to keep things interesting. Action turned up in some scenes through some gun fights and an explosion or two. For a movie described as an action adventure, there wasn’t enough action. The little violence that was in the movie wasn’t graphic. Other than that I ended up enjoying Bandidas for the most part. The movie managed to be entertaining overall even though it did have some problems. The movie can be enjoyed as long expectations aren’t too high. People that like the cast might enjoy the movie.

January 12, 2007: BANDIDAS may not set new standards for filmmaking, whether those standards are for westerns, comedies, action flicks, or slapstick, but it is just as awful lot of fun to watch! The script by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen is pretty shallow and at times borders on maudlin, but it is also peppered with some little one-liners that allow the stars to show off their comedic talents. Directors Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg are neophytes and wisely allow the star qualities of Salma Hayek and Penélope Cruz to reign and have a good time both as opposites (Hayak comes from money and education and Cruz comes from the farm) and as partners is bank robbing - done of course in the Robin Hood manner. The bad guy is the reliable Dwight Yoakim and the fall guy is the always lively Steve Zahn. The quasi-good guy who trains the divas to be robbers is portrayed by Sam Shepard. And that is about all the viewer needs to know to realize the movie is in good hands. No, the story isn't particularly ' find themselves - dividing their concentration between settling evil vendettas and vying for best kisser role with Steve Zahn. This is a comedy, folks, and a good lighthearted outing for two of our best actresses. Worth an evening's viewing! Grady Harp
