Editorial Reviews

This popular science fiction series -- arguably the genre's most talked about since the original Star Trek -- has already been released on DVD, but this new collection assembles five feature-length episodes focusing on key events in the show's chronology. In the pilot episode, "The Gathering," alien envoys and other visitors begin congregating at the giant Babylon 5 space station. "In the Beginning," the series' dramatic prequel, chronicles the ongoing battles between humans and alien species that eventually led to Babylon 5's creation. "Thirdspace" presents the discovery of a millennia-old gateway leading to a realm beyond hyperspace -- and possibly to the origins of the universe itself. The question of life after death is explored in "River of Souls," which concentrates on the controversy surrounding a supposedly infallible harvester of souls. And "A Call to Arms" finds Earth in deadly peril, with the gallant B5 crew leading an interstellar effort to stave off disaster. These five lengthy episodes, each complete in itself, boast impressive story lines and production values worthy of feature films. The show's most popular characters -- played by Bruce Boxleitner, Richard Biggs, Claudia Christian, Stephen Furst, and Bill Mumy, among others -- are all on hand, and series creator J. Michael Straczynski supplies brand-new commentaries and introductions. Various cast members make their own observations, and there's also a recently shot featurette to help round out the assortment of supplemental features. Even if you already have the box sets of all five seasons, you'll find enough material in this new collector's edition to justify picking it up. Ed Hulse, Barnes & Noble

August 08, 2004: Finally! All the movies together, with commentaries on each! In case you haven't seen them yet, here's a little about each: The Gathering- The Pilot movie that launched the series. Babylon 5, a spacestation dedicated to peace has just gone online, but there are elements out there who want to make sure this dream is snuffed out. In the Beginning- A prequel to the series, detailing the Earth-Minbari War. Thirdspace- My personal favorite, with some neat J&D scenes, This covers what happens when the crew discovers and Ancient Vorlon Artifact. River of Souls- The Soul Hunters have come, looking for a soul vessel that's been stolen from them. There's some wonderful Garibaldi/Lochley scenes in this one. A call to Arms- A Pilot for the Crusade series; the ISA must battle the Drakh to Protect Earth.
