    B. Monkey adopts the attitude of grunge while following the conventions of the romantic crime thriller. Asia Argento (daughter of the Italian cult horror director) stars as London-based thief Beatrice, known as B. Monkey in criminal circles, who decides to give up her life of crime when she falls in love with jazz-loving elementary school teacher (Jared Harris). But, as one might expect, her past complicates matters. That's a good thing here, because her past includes the irresistible Rupert Everett, who plays Paul, Beatrice's friend. His sly delivery and all-around panache nicely balance out the film's more mawkish elements. The swaggering Argento, decked out in platform heels and miniskirt (when she's dressed), smokes and swears throughout most of the film, while Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Velvet Goldmine) brings adrenaline and unsettling danger to his role as another of Beatrice's cohorts. Director Michael Radford (Il Postino) also wrote the script -- a familiar tale given a fresh spin by the talented young cast. John Guida, Barnes & Noble

    Not Horrible...by Gonzo84

May 12, 2009: I've always read mixed reviews about this film. The main reason why I viewed this feature was for Asia Argento and Director Michael Radford. I love Il Postino and this film is far from that kind of love story. This is Radford's first film since Postino and has the same elements with the story being a love/romance tale. Asia Argento is not only strikingly gorgeous, but she has a lot talent and this shows her early career. It's never easy to take famous film-makers child's work seriously, but Argento is a real piece of work and shines throughout any of her films, including the awful XXX with Vin Diesel. As I've read reviews, I noticed myself as well picking up the fact that this film feels like a B-Movie. Everything seems to just be simple. There are points where you get into the scenes and action and even the sexuality, but it's not some balls out action flick. Action/Romances are not easy to capture anyway, cause they can either be excellent or just really horrible. This one is in the middle. True Romance and Natural Born Killers are the greatest Action/Romance films out there. So if you're looking for an exciting thrill ride, well you could take your chances with this feature, but you'll be more into Asia Argento's nudity than the actual story. Even though the cast does a great job and the soundtrack featuring Portishead keeps this film sharp. This is definitely a must-see for Argento fans...

I Also Recommend: Natural Born Killers, Bonnie and Clyde, True Romance.

June 10, 2001: This is a movie of how two completely different people overcome everything from impotence to a crime boss on their heels. Asia Argento delivers a knockout performance as B, a fun loving thief with a dark mentality towards life. At a bar, she is spotted by Alan (Jared Harris) who instantly falls for this black haired beauty. The two soon start to see each other, overcoming sexuality and personal problems with the other. In the mix toss in Paul (played excellently by Rupert Everett) B's friend and a mentor in some aspects, who owes money to people who would see him, and B dead. As the couple chase happiness and normalcy, B is quickly drawn back into her world of crime, and quickly decides to get out of it again, and this time for good. The film keeps an intensity and style throughout it that are hard to match. It only gets better in the end, where things are resolved unexpectedly, and not for the best of everyone. This is a film worthy of owning, worthy of drooling over,(due mostly to Asia's body baring performance) and worthy of watching more than once. It comes straight at the watcher, daring them to leave the seat, cause you never know what will happen next. MSD.
