In Avatar: The Last Airbender's mythical setting, the world is separated into four nations: the Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. Within each of these nations are men, women, and children who have special powers, allowing them to "bend" or manipulate the elements. Once in a generation, there is an Avatar: a Bender who can use all four elements. A century ago, a young Air Nomad boy by the name of Aang had this special talent but was accidentally trapped within a ball of ice. When the series begins, Aang is freed into a confusing new existence; much has changed in the 100 years since he's been gone. Unfortunately, he's saddened to discover that he is now the last of his nation after an evil lord of the Fire Nation wiped out the Air Nomads during a war. Now Aang -- and his friends Katara and Sokka -- must use his powers to restore peace to the four nations while battling the evil Fire Prince Zuko. Avatar: The Last Airbender began on the cable network Nickelodeon in February 2005, and instantly became a huge hit. Combining elements of Chinese kung fu, Tibetan philosophy, Japanese martial arts forms, and even Hindu spiritual beliefs, Avatar is a truly unique contribution to the anime style of kids' cartoons.
