Audrey Rose is a "thinking man's" horror film, which in a way is unfortunate, since it tended to be ignored amidst the many spell-it-all-out scarefests of the late '70s. Marsha Mason and John Beck play Janice and Bill Templeton, a happily married couple, the parents of well-adjusted preteen Ivy (Susan Swift). Their family security is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious stranger, Elliot Hoover (Anthony Hopkins). At first mistaken for a potential child molester, Hoover explains that his obsessive interest in young Ivy is actually paternal. It is Hoover's contention that their daughter is the reincarnation of his own child, who died in a horrible accident. This information is dismissed out of hand-and then strange things begin happening. Directed by Robert Wise (who had previously helmed the psychological thriller The Haunting), Audrey Rose was adapted by co-producer Frank De Felitta from his own novel. Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

September 14, 2009: Audrey Rose is a great pick if you like movies about reincarnation. I love Anthony Hopkins as an Actor! Marsha Mason's acting was superb! She truly played the mother role with such great emotion and love. Susan Swift played Ivy "Audrey Rose" and was so convincing when she was having night terrors and flashbacks.

I don't know what the first reviewer was thinking but this is one of my all time favorites!

June 13, 2009: Audrey Rose is, simply put, the most obvious Exorcist rip-off ever made. And that's saying something considering the slew of said rip-offs that flooded theaters in the mid to late 1970's. From the cold, posh apartment to the quiet spooky atmosphere, Audrey Rose cops it's entire set design from The Exorcist right outta the gate. And it only gets worse from there. We have a little girl who may be possesed by an uncontrollable spirit. A petrified mother who slowly comes to understand what's happening to her little girl. And a team of experts who fail to find a cure for the girls fits of insanity. They throw in a mysterious stranger who might know how to save this child. It all reeks to high heaven when the mother asks if her daughter is possesed and the stranger replies that she is the reincarnated soul of his dead daughter. OH!!! So this is nothing like the Exorcist! It's about reincarnation, not possesion! Silly me... The conclusion involves a head shrink 'removing' the trapped soul of the dead little girl. Nothing like Father Karas exorcising the demon from Regan at all... The worst thing about this film isn't the fact the it's nothing but a rip-off, it's that it unbelievably boring! It isn't creepy, it isn't scary, and it isn't interesting. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. Watch The Exorcist a thousand times before you think about watching this watse of time. I'd like this movie exorcised from my soul. Garbage.
