    Editorial Reviews

The town of Athens, Georgia exists mainly to provide services to the local university. It also serves as the setting for a whole movement of small, independent rock bands -- which is the subject of this documentary. Cheap local rents and plentiful audiences create a venue for the fulfillment of many a creative dream in this unlikely location, as most of the musicians featured here (whose style is based on U.S. and European punk styles of the 1970s) have no desire to become big hits and only want a chance to perform before a live audience. An additional segment focuses on the accomplishments of the highly eccentric "Reverend" Howard Finster, whose artwork for the Talking Heads album Little Creatures won a national "Album Cover of the Year" award. April 19, 2009: Good Documentary of Athens club & music scene in the 1980's.The Flat Duo Jets are filmed playing a fraternity party with manic energy,Dreams So Real are featured in a different setting, working in the recording studio. At one point Peter Buck from REM is interviewed, dressed in a bathrobe & pajamas he talks to interviewer while sipping a can of beer. The Squall's play their potential Top 40 hit "Nah,nah, nah, nah" in an area club before an enthused crowd, and then a segment features Pylon. Many, including members of REM,thought Pylon was the best band in Athens.

To illustrate the world of Athens beyond the music scene, self taught artist Reverend Finster comments on his work & how he got his original inspiration to create art, meanwhile the owner of Walter's BBQ is questioned about his locally famous restaraunt. All the area bands love Walter's,Pete Buck bought a house nearby in part to be near his favorite place to eat.I liked this movie,if you're a fan of the mid 1980's rock scene you ought to see "Athens GA Inside Out".
