This action-packed remake of the John Carpenter classic tells the tale of an under-manned Detroit police precinct on its last day of operation that finds itself under siege by a ruthless force that will not stop. This time, a notorious cop-killer and mobster Marion Bishop (Laurence Fishbourne) is unexpectedly brought into the precinct during a blizzard on New Year's Eve, much to the dismay of police sergeant Jake Roenick (Ethan Hawke). By nightfall, the remaining cops and prisoners find themselves fighting for their lives against a group of rogue cops intent on taking down Bishop before he testifies against them in the courtroom. November 28, 2006: Save the excellent character acting of Laurence Fishburne and Gabriel Byrne and the subtle hinting of racial hatred and cop vs. criminal (who is the real criminals in this one) and lower ranked criminals vs. common junkies. But in the end, they have to band together against those who have no sense of law or common decency: corrupt cops. There really is no worse things than corrupt cops. Besides the commentary, though, this movie had no direction from Jean-Francois Richet. The turnout is like Iraq--bad all over and no until you hit the theater.

August 07, 2006: The problem with this movie is that right from the second it starts, it begins building toward something. There are some interesting shootout scenes, but otherwise you're mostly left thinking "Okay...but when is something REALLY going to happen?" In the end, everything ends up building to...nothing. It feels like this movie had a lot of potential, but fails utterly to amount to it.
