Editorial Reviews

It's not every day that one hears something this close to a pop music performance featuring a cellist, violinist, and double bassist; but then, these are not your everyday performers. The trio Appalachian Journey is led by one of the greatest musicians of our time, Yo-Yo Ma, who is joined by violinist Mark O'Connor and double bassist Edgar Meyer. Recorded live at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City on April 5, 2000, the production offers fingerboard-close shots of these performers in action. And they are definitely in action. From the frenetic country-inspired opening composition "1B" to the rollicking "Indecision," the players saw away with reckless abandon, yet never miss a single note or beat. A pair of delightful vocal performances punctuate the primarily instrumental proceedings: Singer Alison Kraus offers her tender vocals to the Stephen Foster song "Slumber My Darling;" and James Taylor performs Foster's classic "Hard Times Come Again No More." In between songs, the three musicians -- who act like good old friends onstage -- tell anecdotes and tales of the music and their lives. In interviews with the musicians recorded during rehearsals, each reveals that the project was an enlightening musical experience. Appalachian Journey is a chance to see and hear great musicians playing largely modern American folk music with a love and passion that might make folkies blush. Barnes & Noble
