An American Tail is a beautifully rendered animated flim that tells an overly familiar story in terms children can easily understand. Fievel Mousekewitz and his family of Russian-Jewish mice escape from their homeland in the late 1800s, boarding a boat headed toward America to evade the Czarist rule of the Russian cats. Fievel, however, is separated from his family upon his arrival in New York City, and he discovers to his horror that there are cats in America too (his father said there weren't). Fievel meets his share of friendly and hostile mice, and he eventually befriends a cat as well. Former Disney animator Don Bluth co-produced and directed this often heartwarming yarn, the first animated feature presented by Steven Spielberg, and it has its charms despite a number of cliché situations. June 21, 2009: Having seen the original 21 yrs ago, my wife & I still sing its songs with passion. After our engagement, we went to see this little known, yet widely admired movie. We laughed 'til we cried, then we cried 'til we laughed! This movie captures your heart as the songs serenade you into Fivel's world, which mirrored the plight of many emigrants. The songs NEVER SAY NEVER to WE'RE A DUO to the unforgettable, SOMEWHERE OUT THERE, will wisk you on an emotional rollercoaster ride that even most adults will enjoy! Of course, my wife & I are still kids at heart. In tough times, we sing WE'RE A DUO. When challenged...NEVER SAY NEVER. Our wedding theme song was SOMEWHERE OUT THERE. This movie smartly incorporates all aspects of human experiences if you look and listen (example: Fivel mentions THE BROTHER'S CARAMEL SAUCE). Admittedly, this movie has sentimental value to us, and after 21 happy years, we're still "a duo!"

May 11, 2009: I just love all of these in the series. Of coures Fivel is adventurous little guy, but always wanting to do the right thing. He's always the cowboy with the "white hat". These stories show tough situations where Fivel needs to make moral decisions about family and friends. He works through surviving without his family and always manages to work his way back to them by never giving up. Great stories for young and old alike.
