This telethon -- the highest rated ever -- defines great music in aid of a greater cause. The national catastrophe on September 11, 2001, shook the nation deeply but ultimately brought Americans together. One display of unity was the star-studded telethon to raise money for the United Way's September 11 Fund. To commemorate the courage of the civilians, police officers, and firefighters lost to the tragedy, the America: A Tribute to Heroes program catches the intersection of altruism, entertainment, and sober spiritual reflection. "My City of Ruins," Bruce Springsteen's elegiac opener, expresses the grief felt by all, while comfort is found in Stevie Wonder's "Love's in Need of Love Today" and Paul Simon's "Bridge over Troubled Water." Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers give voice to America's defiant spirit on "Won't Back Down." A cover of the John Lennon classic "Imagine" by Neil Young articulates the dream of a peaceful world, and patriotic communal spirit is on display in the closing chorus of "America the Beautiful," led by Willie Nelson.
