Fans of this long-running BBC comedy benefited when Series 5 began in September 1988: 26 episodes were produced rather than the usual 6. Seeking to bring 'Allo to the U.S. audience, an American production company co-funded 26 episodes, enough for an entire season in the U.S. The deal fell through, however, allowing British fans alone to enjoy 26 25-minute episodes -- shorter than the 30-minute broadcasts customary in the U.K., due to the fact that they were created with American commercials in mind. This set offers the first 13 episodes of Series 5, with Ren� (Gorden Kaye) and his Resistance compatriots continuing their bumbling, humorous plots to fight the Nazis. In this collection, Ren� finally discovers the truth about the painting Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies by Van Clomp; Communists show up in France; and Ren� gets himself into matrimonial difficulties with Edith (Carmen Silvera).
