The second season of Norman Lear's socially (and comically) progressive sitcom All in the Family adds further meat to the series' narrative bone, as it continues to flesh out some of television's most unforgettable characters. Archie (Carroll O'Connor), Edith (Jean Stapleton), Mike (Rob Reiner), and Gloria (Sally Struthers) muddle through such hot-button issues as racism, communism, impotence, and gentrification as the show fuses comedy and conscience, somehow finding the perfect balance. The highlight of AITF's sophomore season is undoubtedly "Sammy's Visit," wherein Sammy Davis Jr. journeys to Queens to recover a lost briefcase and encounters Archie in all his bigoted glory. This three-disc set includes all 24 episodes from the show's second season in original broadcast order. It is a must for both diehard fans and those unfortunate few who've yet to discover one of TV's most endearing tragicomedies.

  • "The Saga of Cousin Oscar": Archie is incensed when his sponging cousin Oscar has the nerve to drop dead in the upstairs bedroom.
  • "Gloria Poses in the Nude": Mike has second thoughts after he agrees to let Gloria pose as a nude model for one of his friends.
  • "Archie in the Lock-Up": Archie suffers the ultimate indignity when he's arrested along with a group of radicals at a protest rally.
  • "Edith Writes a Song": A pair of burglars holds the family at bay with Archie's own pistol.
  • "Flashback: Mike Meets Archie": On the Stivics' first wedding anniversary, the family recalls the day Archie and Michael met.
  • "The Election Story": Mike and Gloria campaign for the liberal candidate in a local election, while Archie places himself in the opposing camp.
  • "Edith's Accident": A priest pays a call to reward Edith's honesty for leaving a note on his car after she accidentally dents it with a large can of peaches.
  • "The Blockbuster": An unscrupulous black real estate salesman tempts Archie to sell his house to a black family at an inflated profit.
  • "Mike's Problem": Gloria is upset when Mike's nervousness over his grades causes him to become temporarily impotent.

  • "Cousin Maude's Visit": Edith's feisty cousin Maude drops in for a visit during a flu epidemic at the Bunker house.
  • "Christmas Day at the Bunkers": Archie casts a pall on the family's Yuletide spirits when he complains that he was passed over for a Christmas bonus.
  • "The Elevator Story": Archie gets stuck in an elevator along with a pregnant Puerto Rican woman and her husband, an aging hippie, and an erudite black businessman.

  • "Archie Sees a Mugging": Archie refuses to get involved with the police, even though he's the only witness to a neighborhood mugging.
  • "Archie and Edith Alone": The Bunkers are on their own for eight days after Mike and Gloria go off to spend a week at a commune.
  • "Edith Gets a Mink": Archie is too proud to let Edith accept a mink stole from her cousin Amelia -- until he sees a chance to make a $300 profit.
  • "Sammy's Visit": Sammy Davis Jr. encounters Archie at his worst when the star ventures out to Queens to retrieve a briefcase he left in Munson's taxicab.
  • "Edith the Judge": Edith arbitrates a dispute between Archie and the irate proprietor of a laundromat.
  • "Archie Is Jealous": Archie is disturbed to discover that Edith once spent an entire weekend with an old beau.

    August 09, 2009: This is an excellent series. Nothing produced today has this quality. Unfortunately, today, everyone has to be politically correct. Archie Bunker has a right to say what he wants to, and he does.

    I am glad to see that only one side of each DVD was used. Some other shows are on two-sided DVDs that are difficult to use.

    June 22, 2009: There's no need for exaggeration when declaring All in the Family 1 of America's best sitcoms ever! I was a teenager when these programs 1st aired and it remains 1 of my all time favorite shows and my favorite sitcom ever! Jean Stapleton's characterization of Edith Bunker is something you do not want to miss! My favorite episode of any sitcom ever is "Edith's Accident" in which she dented someone's car with a can of peaches. I'm 47 years old and nothing has ever made me laugh as much as that 1 episode of television in my life! Buy this DVD set! You have my personal guarantee that you'll love this show. The entire cast is funny but Edith is a scream!!!! I'm still laughing!
