Based on the story The Wisdom of Eve by Mary Orr, All About Eve is an elegantly bitchy backstage story revolving around aspiring actress Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter). Tattered and forlorn, Eve shows up in the dressing room of Broadway mega-star Margo Channing (Bette Davis), weaving a melancholy life story to Margo and her friends. Taking pity on the girl, Margo takes Eve as her personal assistant. Before long, it becomes apparent that naïve Eve is a Machiavellian conniver who cold-bloodedly uses Margo, her director Bill Sampson (Gary Merill), Lloyd's wife Karen (Celeste Holm), and waspish critic Addison De Witt (George Sanders) to rise to the top of the theatrical heap. Also appearing in All About Eve is Marilyn Monroe, introduced by Addison De Witt as "a graduate of the Copacabana school of dramatic art." This is but one of the hundreds of unforgettable lines penned by writer/director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, the most famous of which is Margo Channing's lip-sneering admonition, "Fasten your seat belts. April 16, 2009: Forget about the movie being in black and white. All About Eve is a rags to riches tale that so many other films after it have tried to capture the dynamic of this story. I am thankful that I have a mother who likes classics and appreciates a good story because it is her who made sure that I first watched this movie on Turner Movie Classics (R) sure it is not action packed but you have to love the narration that accompanies this film.

November 15, 2007: I first watched this movie because of a Marilyn Monroe kick I was on but within the first 5 minutes, I was taken with the severity and fierce presence of Bette Davis and didn't even notice Marilyn! Right up there with Sunset Boulevard, this is one of the best movies about The Business- SB focusing on The Movies, EVE focusing on The Theatre. As the movie and storyline develop, the viewer can almost feel the tension in the air, as if it is leaking through the tv screen. The casting was simply perfection from Bette Davis to Thelma Ritter, who is always a delight playing second fiddle to virtually every leading lady in Hollywood. The movie, if possible, is even more amazing when you know a little of the background info- Anne Baxter and Bette Davis had a real life relationship very similar to that of their characters, Bette Davis and leading man Gary Merrill fell in love during filming, married, and 10 yrs later had a not-so-friendly divorce. I've been to film school and believe me, kids, everything they teach you can be learned by watching this film. A true classic.
