    Editorial Reviews

Originally filmed at the Covent Garden, this Royal Opera production features noted soprano Cheryl Studer in the title role, and also includes Dennis O'Neill and Luciana d'Intino. Verdi's classic is performed as it was originally intended -- in the opera house rather than atop a Broadway stage -- and is complemented by music from the Royal Opera House Orchestra under the direction of conductor Edward Downes. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide All Movie Guide

June 06, 2003: Cheryl Studer is as wonderful as always in this Royal Opera production conducted by Edward Downes. The other singers don't quite match her, but both Luciana d'Intino as Amneris and Alexandru Agache as Amonsaro have nice voices and good acting. Dennis O'Neal is Radames, and I don't think his voice or acting are right for that role. The sound is good, but there is a little hiss like cassettes have. The English subtitles can't be turned off. The sets are sparse but nice. I've seen the La Scala DVD, and that one has better singers but it also has sparse sets. If you want only one DVD of this opera, and you want great singing plus a grand production, the Met DVD is the only way to go.
