Editorial Reviews

Though they might be fooled by her delicate exterior, criminals underestimate Agatha Christie's mild-mannered spinster sleuth at their peril! In the expert care of acclaimed actress Geraldine McEwan, the beloved Miss Marple blends into the scenery of her elegant surroundings. All the better to observe the foibles of human nature that lead to evil -- and to surprise one and all when she solves crimes that baffle the professionals. Rich with period detail, these all-new adaptations feature stellar supporting casts, including Richard E. Grant, Amanda Burton, Eileen Atkins, Peter Davison, Jane Seymour, and more. The mysteries include: "Towards Zero"; "At Bertram's Hotel"; "Nemesis"; and "Ordeal by Innocence," all of which originally aired in the U. K. in 1987, and subsequently aired on PBS's Mystery! series. September 25, 2007: I looked forward to seeing the new Miss Marple series on PBS since they've never had a British Mystery series that wasn't superior. Well, all hopes were gone after seeing both Bertram's Hotel and Nemesis. Yes, she is comical. However, I don't think that was the director's actual intent. Geraldine McEwan is horribly miscast (impecabble "past" career notwithstanding). As a matter of fact, there are a lot of used-to-be good actors in this series. Regardless, it's lousy. The plots are truly stupid. Bad direction, and mind-numbing foolishness that is simply B-O-R-I-N-G. How on earth they were able to fill 90 minutes for each episode is beyond me. There's one GOOD thing about it, though. If you have INSOMNIA, watch it (videotape it so you get it for free). It's a guaranteed snoozer.

September 20, 2007: Geraldine McEwan breathes new life and she provides both an amusing and charming characterization of Agatha Christie's murder solving matron Miss Jane Marple in all three of the current Marple Series. Celebrated on stage, screen and television for forty years, Geraldine McEwan gives us a charming, amusing little lady crime solver, who once you've met her, will be a friend of yours for life. Truly excellent production standards and top supporting actors make Marple 3 another winning conrtibution to the murder mystery genre. Steeped in the mileu of post-World War II, early 1950's, southern England with its quaint villages and lovely coastlines, and at a posh hotel in London, Marple 3 continues the crisp, fast moving murder mysteries, filled with the odd characters, beautiful people and surprising plot twists, which have characterized the previous two Marple Series. It's England and about English people mostly, so don't forget that. The accents mostly are English. Not every slang term or period comment may be apparent to the modern viewer. To a viewer like me, that's part of the period charm. Be aware of these aspects of the production, however, should these aspects be a bother to you. Unlike Agatha Christie's better known sleuth, the 1930's Belgian Hercule Poirot, there is nothing stiff, stuffy or sterile about Miss Marple. She flirts, she jokes, she counsels and consoles with the many people of all ages and of all walks of life encountered in her mysteries. As further displayed in Marple 3, this charming, knitting, late-60's-something, proper British lady is also The Nemesis who unerringly reconstructs the crime and finds the murderer, every time. Marple 3 is a must for PBS Mystery lovers like me!
