Sophisticated and sublime, Adam's Rib is one of George Cukor's finest collaborations with Katharine Hepburn. In this romantic comedy Adam and Amanda Bonner (Spencer Tracy and Hepburn), two lawyers who happen to be married, take on opposing sides of a highly publicized case. The crime in question involves a distressed wife (Judy Holliday) who shoots and wounds her philandering husband. For Amanda the trial becomes a cause for women's rights. For Adam, the prosecuting attorney, the trial becomes a travesty of justice. By juxtaposing the Bonners' public and private worlds, the courthouse and the country house, Cukor highlights with great wit the give-and-take between happily married partners, from role playing to verbal jousting. Written by a real-life married couple, Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin, the movie is enlivened by the sparks that fly between Hepburn and Tracy, unmarried lovers in real-life, as well as by Holliday's artfully daffy performance.
