Editorial Reviews

In this legal drama from director Sydney Pollack, Sally Field stars as Megan, an ambitious newpaper reporter who, based on information from FBI investigator Rosen, played by Bob Balaban, writes a scathing article that implicates Gallagher, a reclusive business-owner played by Paul Newman, in the recent disappearance of a labor leader. When Gallagher confronts Megan and sets her straight, the two team together to prove his innocence and have a few romantic interludes along the way. Wilford Brimley and Melinda Dillon also star. June 19, 2009: Meghan Carter (Sally Field) is a reporter who uncovers what she believes is a true story regarding Michael Gallagher (Paul Newman) -- that he was somehow involved in the disappearance of Joseph Diaz. In her rush to get this story to print, she doesn't consider how her actions will affect others. What's even worse, Meghan meets Michael when he comes to the newspaper office asking about the source of story. After several meetings, Meghan discovers that she's very attached to Michael Gallagher. When she publishes a story from Michael's alibi witness, Teresa, that he was not involved in the crime, Teresa kills herself that morning as it contained a secret that Teresa did not want to make known.

Sally Fields and Paul Newman give superb acting in this movie and I would recommend it to anyone.

March 18, 2004: If you like deep, thought provoking movies that keep you really thinking the whole time, watch Absence of Malice. This movie is not for shallow movie watchers (cough, American Pie) but you really need to focus your attention on it to understand the trueness of the movie. In fact, the only weird thing about it is just the photography, slightly skewed at times since it was filmed 20 years ago. Besides that, it is a highly enjoyable, excellent ride.
