Producer/director Melvin Frank struck box-office gold when he teamed George Segal with Glenda Jackson in A Touch of Class. Segal plays married insurance executive Steve Blackburn, who can't seem to avoid bumping into divorced fashion designer Vicki Allessio (Glenda Jackson) wherever he goes. Finally bowing to the inevitable, Steve and Vicki fall in love. He suggests a romantic rendezvous in Spain...but nothing, absolutely nothing, goes as planned. August 31, 2005: Though the film has weathered a bit in the last 30 years, "A Touch of Class" still remains a bright, romantic comedy with sparkling performances by Glenda Jackson (Best Actress Oscar) and George Segal as a pair of clandestine lovers in a London-Spain tryst. Their quarrelsome 'brief encounter' in sunny Spain is still quite deft and Jackson and Segal are very appealing as the couple. The screenplay by Melvin Frank and Jack Rose is not invariably sophisticated, but it's great fun most of the way. The film surprisingly received five Academy Award nominations in 1973 including Best Picture and Best Screenplay and was an unexpected box-office hit and ran for months. Glenda's second Oscar win still remains as one of the biggest upsets in Academy history. She didn't even bother to show up to collect her prize, later comparing the event to "a public hanging."
