    Editorial Reviews

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. It is the best of Charles Dickens, as the great writer's classic love story is brought to life in this 1989 Masterpiece Theatre presentation. Set in Paris in the midst of the French Revolution, the story finds aristocrat Charles Darnay (Xavier Deluc) accused of spying for the King of France, until help comes in the form of the strikingly similar-looking Sydney Carton (James Wilby, An Ideal Husband, Howard's End) -- and Darnay is freed. But the plot thickens: Carton has told Darnay's fiancée, Lucie Manette (Serena Gordon, Goldeneye, After the War ) that he would sacrifice his life for her or for anyone she loves -- keeping hidden his own desire for her. Each man's love of Manette is ultimately tested, as riotous crowds cheer for the blood of aristocrats with only one way to be sated...the guillotine! But whose head will be on the chopping block, Darnay or Carton? R.J. Wafer, Barnes & Noble
