Editorial Reviews

Marlon Brando reprised his role as Stanley Kowalski in Elia Kazan's magnificent screen version of Tennessee Williams's great American play A Streetcar Named Desire, re-creating on film the standard-setting performance that wowed Broadway audiences. As the virile, blue-collar brute Stanley, Brando's sensuality takes the breath away. And Vivian Leigh is heartbreaking in her Oscar-winning portrayal of Blanche Dubois, a ravaged Southern belle clinging to faded notions of Southern gentility until her brother-in-law shatters her delusions forever. Kim Hunter and Karl Malden, both of whom appeared in the stage version, also won Oscars for their superb supporting performances. Although filmed entirely on sets, no movie has ever captured the sultry, decaying atmosphere of New Orleans's French Quarter as potently as this classic (it also won the 1951 Oscar for Art Direction). Production codes at the time of the film's release required Kazan to cut some footage considered too openly sexual; these moments are restored in this definitive version. April 06, 2008: My all time favorite! This movies sexual tension was way ahead of it's time. Brando is raw and brutal and yet sexy and you just can't take your eyes off him. You almost understand the whole "Hey Stella" scene and why is wife (and sister in law Blanche) were under his spell. The music and dingy lighting adds just perfectly to the mood of this steamy New Orleans movie. You cannot miss this movie. It is an American classic of raw sexuality and a fragile womans' desent into madness.

August 06, 2007: I know I should be giving this movie a perfect five since it's a classic, but I felt like it was a bit to soap operaish at times. Let me say this: Marlon Brando is the king of all actors. His performances have all been flawless and unlike anything you will ever see. He is the king of Hollywood, our Man O' War of cinema. He brings more life to his characters than anyone else.
