Blake Edwards comes a cropper in this lunk-headed slapstick homage to Laurel and Hardy, Mack Sennett, and Jerry Lewis. Ted Danson and Howie Mandell play Spence Holden and Dennis Powell, a couple of idiots who find themselves involved with a pack of gangsters. Spence is a two-bit actor who is at a racetrack location with his pal Dennis, when he overhears two small-time thugs, Wayne "Turnip" Parragella (Richard Mulligan) and Maurice "Binky" Drundza (Stuart Margolin), talk about doping a horse set to run a race. It turns out that Turnip and Binky are under orders to carry out the dastardly scheme by their underworld boss Tony Pazzo (Paul Sorvino). When Spence and Dennis are found out, they find themselves pursued all over the Los Angeles area by an angry Tony Pazzo mob in an ever-escalating series of races and chases, crashes and smashes, and shouting and screaming. February 02, 2006: Ted Danson and Howie Mandel are hilarious in Blake Edwards' take on the Laurel and Hardy classic "A Fine Mess." I knew Ted Danson was funny from his days on "Cheers" but he really shows his funny side as he portrays the skirt-chasing, B-movie actor Spence Holden. When Spence is paired with Mandel's Dennis Powell, the drive-in burger stand worker and best friend who gets dragged into the "fine mess" with Spence, the comic chemistry is apparent. This showcase of zany slapstick finds Spence being pursued by a couple of mob henchmen after overhearing a plot to drug a race horse and win a large amount of money. Of course, Spence cannot help but see an opportunity to better his own situation, and he drags his good friend Dennis Powell (Mandel) into the fray, and the results are chaotic. One understated but very funny character is Ellen, played by Blake Edwards' real-life daughter Jennifer Edwards. As the love interest of Mandel's character, she somehow manages to hold the middle ground between Mandel's eccentric and often over-the-top antics and Danson's suave lothario. The title song by the Temptations is a classic that really gives the film a boost from the beginning. The late Richard Mulligan, a regular in Blake Edwards movies, is hilarious as one of the henchmen pursuing Spence and Dennis. Paul Sorvino, in a brief role, plays the mob boss and husband of one of Spence's conquests. This is one of those movies I love to watch when I really need to laugh, and it always delivers. I recommend it to anyone who loves crazy comedies!!!
