Editorial Reviews

Broadcast worldwide from Cape Town, South Africa, on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2003, the charity event "46664" brought together a stunning lineup of mostly English and African performers for a unique concert experience, dotted with musical moments for the ages. South African leader Nelson Mandela looms large over the event, both figuratively and literally. The title comes from the number he was assigned as a prisoner of the country's apartheid government, and it serves as the symbol for his global anti-AIDS/HIV initiative. And while he speaks at the event and is shown often in cutaways, digging the tunes, it is the seven-story-high bronze likeness of his smiling countenance, towering over the musicians, that never lets you forget that it's his party. Eurythmics maestro Dave Stewart serves as music director along with Queen stalwarts Brian May and Roger Taylor, and they keep the 4½-hour show flowing. The double-DVD set, 46664: The Event, includes the full concert presentation, which kicks off with a performance by Beyoncé and continues with appearances by Bob Geldof, Queen, Bono, and the Coors, among others. Not surprisingly, it's the home team that provides many of the musical highlights, including songs from Youssou N'Dour, Bongo Maffin, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, either alone or in various cross-pollinations with one another and the assembled Brits. The curious will welcome a glimpse of Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) joining Peter Gabriel for a rendition of his worldwide hit "Wild World." And while you're saying, "It sure is," Gabriel segues into a blissful rendition of "In Your Eyes," accompanied by N'Dour and Angelique Kidjo, and follows with a stirring "Biko," noting that it's the first time he'd performed the song in South Africa. It's an early crescendo, maybe too early. But fans will no doubt bounce around to their favorites on this wonderful 40-plus-song collection, perhaps even beginning with the festive "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions" medley that leads into the ethereal "46664" chant that closes the night. The 46664 concert has also been released on three CDs:African Prayer, Long Walk to Freedom, and Amandla. Barnes & Noble
