Editorial Reviews

This spot-on sequel to Disney's cherished 1961 animated classic boasts a pedigreed voice cast and replicates the original film's look and character design with flair. With 99 brothers and sisters, puppy Patch can't help but feel a little bit lost. But when he is accidentally left behind in his family's move to their Dalmatian Plantation in the country, he runs away to London. There, he meets his TV hero, Thunderbolt (Barry Bostwick), an "overacting ham" who can't function without a script and whose sidekick, Lightning (Jason Alexander), is scheming to take his place. Meanwhile, Cruella de Vil schemes to dognap Patch's family in order to inspire a spot-obsessed artist (Martin Short). It will be up to Patch to inspire Thunderbolt and become a one-of-a-kind wonder dog himself. As with the other "next generation" Disney video premieres (The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, Lady and the Tramp 2: Scamp's Adventure), Patch is something of a mixed breed. The animation does not rate best-of-show honors, but it is decidedly better than most television fare. This frolicsome feature is more in the spirit of the original than the broad slapstick of the live-action remake and its sequel, giving this franchise a new leash on life Donald Liebenson, Barnes & Noble
